View Full Version : "Quit telling God what to do." - Putting spooky behavior to work

Einstein refused to believe that a photon could be in all states at once and set out to find an explanation for their seemingly odd behavior. God doesn't play dice with the universe, he said at the time. Danish physicist Neils Bohr, a big proponent of quantum uncertainty, shot back: "Quit telling God what to do."

During the journey, when one photon switched to a slightly higher energy level, its twin instantly switched to a slightly lower one. But the sum of the energies stayed constant, proving that the photons remained entangled.

More important, the team couldn't detect any time difference in the changes. "If there was any communication, it would have to have been at least 10,000 times the speed of light," says Dr. Gisin. "Because this is such an unlikely speed, the conclusion is there couldn't have been communication and so there is non-locality."

I think this is evidence of higher dimensions.

Good thinking. Yeah, I think if I had stuck with physics ('if' I like math and 'if' I had a higher IQ) I would be studying either astrophysics or string theory. Interesting stuff to think about even with my lowish intellect.

Yeah, I doubt it travelled 10K X the speed of light, so it probably just slips into another dimension... maybe a mini worm hole type thing. Just as one of the brightest physicists recently said though, I don't think humans are smart enough to understand it. Or maybe the real issue is just that it may be impossible to built the tools on the scales necessary to understand - like a goldfish trying to comprehend galaxies. Unless that goldfish is really bright, and lives in an astrophysics lab with a scientist who loves goldfish so much that she/he has movies on the walls that have little goldfish astronauts, that fish is not going to ever even vaguely glimpse the scale of even the planet she/he is on.

Hmm, OK. So you think maybe some of these physicists with these brilliant, far-out ideas such as Einstein were visited by angels?

That may be, but I am just thinking that some things may just unprovable with our senses from our perspective even if we create highly specialized tools from the stuff we find in our little aquarium. That, and our imaginations, will always temp us to consider god(s) to help explain things... it seems to be in every cultures (and maybe even every humans) nature. Hopefully the true god (a floating turtle or giant elephant or tiny extra dimensional whale) will step out before us and and set us all straight, so that all those who have used religion to help justify their battles and wars (whether inwardly or outwardly) can be put in their place by the rest of us who know better. Why couldn't this happen at 10xs the speed of light? We might think this is unlikely, but then again at one point humans swore it was impossible for the world to be round, right? Or better yet maybe there is no communication and as the article states later our ways of observing may in fact be the thing that makes these photons instantly change their spin and break the entanglement. I wonder if the photon with a higher power always spins one way once being observed and if the other photon does the exact opposite? If so we might be able to deduce that our way of observing is causing a certain reaction in each particle.

This could lead us to believe that the reaction of "entanglement via laser" could put a certain charge on each photon and after a certain distance or time they simply change. All it says is that these photons were sent down the same length of optic at the same speed and that they changed at the same time...well what if the distances and speeds were not the same? I wonder if they would still instantly change energy levels at the same time. If they do then they would have to be connected in some way...but this way may simply again be time. After so long even if they're sitting next to each other I wonder if they would fluctuate their energy levels and if so this might simply be because they're losing or gaining some of the attraction first caused by a laser beam. Quantum physics is so fascinating, I wish I had the intellect and skill to fully understand and study the theories out there.

Back to what I was originally saying though, just because we cannot measure the speed or way that they communicate doesn't mean it's not happening. They may even be communicating through some form we do not know about and/or cannot measure as you guys have said before. To many people are too quick to say it's a higher power and I'm glad there are some people out there testing and studying this sort of thing. It's already had an impact on data encryption and who knows what else this could be valuable for in the communications and entertainment industry. And if we could ever figure out how and why these particles communicate we may unlock the keys to teleportation devices or time machines (I believe the current theory is that if we can move faster than the speed of light we can travel in time) granted this will all happen in the far future if ever I'm sure!

I think it's like another dimension. Imagine a flat (two dimensional) piece of paper. Now actually get a piece of paper and using your hand holding a pen, put two dots on the paper about four inches apart. If you put an ant on the paper that walks one inch per second, it takes four seconds for the ant to get from one dot to the other. Now while the ant is on the second dot, resting and content with what it has accomplished helping to illustrate this explanation, fold the paper and suddenly SMASH the ant on the first dot. You see now it has only taken a fraction of a second for the ant to travel back to the original dot by use of the third dimension. Similar "magic" can be accomplished in what we observe as reality by going to the fourth, fifth, sixth dimension, etc.

Awww, poor ant. My friend Nishant is an awesome, funny, down-to-earth guy, and he is a Jainist from India - one of the oldest religions in the world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism

He might find that ant story funny, but I doubt his parents would. best

No ants were armed in the telling of that story, but the point to some degree was to make you fear what an entity that exists in the higher dimensions might be able to do. Instantaneously strike you dead, see all time both forward and back, etc.

I agree with the extra dimensions theory and I would venture to say that is how they are communicating as well. That's why I said don't rule out that they are communicating at over 10xs the speed of light. Because if you can simply fold time and space that sort of speed is definitely possible

Folding time.. what a concept!

Well, even if the speed of light is the maximum speed that anything can travel, if 2 particals or photons that are 1 light year away from you repel each other and so one of them starts travel toward you at the speed of light and the other start traveling away from you at the speed of light, then relative to each other, they will be traveling 2Xs the speed of light.

Then if the particle coming toward you goes into a worm hole and it seems to jump through space and arrives with in days rather than a year, then even though its absolute speed is only the speed of light, it could end up traveling many times the speed of light relative to you.

Sweet. I'll remember that next time we rent a car and take a road trip.

Imagine a conciousness that actually resides in that realm and doesn't just have to try to explain the ideas to each other with analogies.
